  • Coloboma - A congenital (present at birth) anomaly in which a portion of a structure of the eye is absent. Usually, the iris, retina, and/or optic nerve.
  • The term coloboma implies the absence of tissue.
  • Typical coloboma usually occurs in the 4th to 6th week of gestation. The notch is usually located towards the bottom of the eye towards the nose in iris coloboma.
  • Iris coloboma - may be in one eye (unilateral) or in both eyes (bilateral). Pupil may be described as an upside down pear shape.
  • Optic disc coloboma - occurs when the coloboma covers the optic nerve. May involve the macula which is responsible for sharp details. This may cause what we know as "white eye" in photographs you take with a camera with flash.
  • Choroidal coloboma is kind of the same as retinal coloboma. The choroid is a highly vascular layer of the eye that lies between the sclera and the retina.
  • Retinal coloboma - a notch or cleft of the retina/part of the retina is missing. Example: 35% of the retina is gone, 65% of the retina is gone or 90% of the retina is gone, depending.
